The Yellow Wallpaper at Carnegie Hall

On January 31, 2025, the Lyric Opera of Orange County made its Carnegie Hall debut with the world premiere of The Yellow Wallpaper, a new opera based on Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 1892 short story. Held in the intimate Weill Recital Hall, the performance captivated the audience with its haunting narrative and evocative score.

Composed by Brooke deRosa, who also portrayed the character Jenney, and featuring a libretto by Diana Farrell, who took on the role of Jane, the opera delved into themes of isolation, mental health, and autonomy. Baritone Michael O'Halloran completed the cast as John, Jane's husband. The story follows Jane's descent into madness as she becomes obsessed with the patterns in the wallpaper of her confinement room, reflecting the oppressive treatments prescribed to women in the 19th century.

The minimalist staging, combined with a six-piece chamber orchestra under the direction of Carl Pantle, created an atmosphere that was both intimate and intense. The music transitioned from serene melodies to dissonant harmonies, mirroring Jane's psychological unraveling and drawing the audience deeper into her experience.

Photographing this premiere was an extraordinary experience. Capturing the performers' raw emotions, the subtle interplay of light and shadow on stage, and the audience's palpable engagement highlighted the profound impact of the performance. The historic ambiance of Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall added a layer of gravitas to the evening, underscoring the significance of debuting such a poignant work in this revered space.
