Protestra’s Presidential Transition Protest Performance at St. Paul & St. Andrew United Methodist Church
On March 1, 2025, PROTESTRA held a powerful concert titled "Protestra 2025: Presidential Transition Protest" at the historic St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York City. This event was more than just a musical performance; it was a compelling stand for human rights and a protest against government overreach, aiming to raise awareness and funds for the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), an organization representing over 200 immigrant and refugee rights groups throughout New York.
The program featured Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, a piece renowned for its subversive messaging crafted under the oppressive censorship of the USSR's totalitarian regime in 1937. This symphony's themes of resilience and hope resonated deeply with the evening's message. Additionally, the concert included "Desert Shelter" by J.E. Hernández, a chamber work reflecting on the harrowing experiences of migrants crossing the Sonoran Desert, inspired by real stories Hernández encountered during his detention by ICE in 2013. Edgar F. Girtain IV's "Unidades de Fuerza" (Unity of Strength), originally composed for PROTESTRA's inaugural performance, received its New York City premiere, celebrating the joy and strength derived from solidarity.
The choice of St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church as the venue was significant. Known for its strong commitment to social justice and love-inspired action, the church provided a space that echoed the concert's themes of advocacy and community support.
Photographing this event was a profound experience. Capturing the musicians' passion, the audience's engagement, and the venue's historic ambiance highlighted the evening's powerful blend of art and activism. The images reflect not only the technical prowess of the performers but also the collective spirit of resistance and hope that permeated the concert.
