La Traviata at Westside Community Garden

On a warm summer evening, the West Side Community Garden transformed into an open-air opera house, as On Site Opera presented excerpts from Verdi’s "La Traviata." This unique performance, part of the "Opera in the Garden" series, offered a delightful blend of nature and culture.

The West Side Community Garden, located on 89th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus, has been a cherished green space in New York City since its founding in 1976. Known for its serene atmosphere and vibrant flowers, the garden provided an enchanting backdrop for the opera, creating an intimate and inviting setting for both performers and audience members alike.

As the night went on, the garden was filled with the sounds of some of opera's most iconic music. The performers wandered among the garden, singing excerpts from "La Traviata," allowing the audience to experience the opera in a refreshing and informal environment. This format not only brought the music closer to the audience but also allowed for a more personal and immersive experience.

Soprano Laura Soto-Bayomi’s portrayal of Violetta Valéry captured the character’s emotional depth and complexity. Baritone Stephen Gaertner and tenor Chauncey Packer also delivered powerful performances, bringing the drama and passion of Verdi’s music to life.

Photographing this event was a unique experience. The natural light and outdoor setting presented both challenges and opportunities. Capturing the performers as they moved among the audience required a keen eye and quick reflexes, but the resulting images were truly rewarding. The combination of the lush garden scenery and the expressive performances created a series of photos that vividly conveyed the spirit of the evening.

The event concluded with enthusiastic applause from the audience, many of whom were experiencing opera for the first time in such a setting. It was a reminder of the accessibility and enduring appeal of opera, especially when presented in creative and inviting formats.
