A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Under St. Marks Theatre

Photographing the rehearsal for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Under St. Marks Theatre, part of FrigidNYC, was an intriguing experience. The intimate setting of this renowned off-off-Broadway venue provided a unique backdrop for capturing the raw energy and creativity of the performers as they prepared for their upcoming show.

Without the usual costumes, the focus was solely on the performers' expressions and movements. The theater was charged with a sense of anticipation and dedication as the cast brought Shakespeare's whimsical characters to life through their passionate performances.

One of the highlights was watching the dynamic interactions between the actors. The chemistry and camaraderie among the cast members were palpable, and it was a pleasure to capture these moments in both color and black-and-white. The contrast between the two editing styles helped to emphasize different aspects of the rehearsal: the vibrancy and warmth of the color photos contrasted beautifully with the timeless and dramatic quality of the black-and-white edits that were requested by the director.

Photographing in such a setting required a keen eye for detail and an ability to anticipate the actors' movements. The absence of costumes meant that every gesture and facial expression became even more significant, and it was essential to capture these fleeting moments with precision.

Director Janani Sreenivasan introduced several creative changes to the show, reimagining the presence and significance of the "Indian changeling" and his mother, giving them names and deeper roles. The forest setting was envisioned as a traveling entity influenced by the fairy king and queen's memories and travels, particularly their recent experiences in India. The production incorporated elements of South Asian classical arts, including music, movement, dance, and costuming, blending them with Western influences to create a unique, multicultural experience.

As the actors rehearsed scenes of magic, mischief, and romance, I found myself drawn into the enchanting world of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The photos from this session reflect not just the hard work and talent of the performers, but also the intimate and collaborative spirit of the production.
