Son of an Unknown Father at the cell theatre

Attending Son of an Unknown Father at the cell theatre was an emotionally charged experience. This staged reading brought to life a powerful story of identity, loss, and the search for one's roots, with performances that reached deeply into the audience's heart.

A man in a white shirt places his hand on the shoulder of another man in a dark jacket. Both appear deeply absorbed in their emotional performances, with one looking down in distress as they stand by a music stand.

The actors used minimal staging, which kept the focus on the raw emotions of the characters. The simplicity allowed for the complexities of the dialogue and personal struggles to take center stage, emphasizing the play's exploration of familial bonds and unresolved questions.

The standout performance came from Reynaldo Piniella, whose portrayal of the lead character, Martin de Porres, the first Black saint of the Americas was deeply moving. Born into slavery in 1600s Peru, Martin was known for his miraculous ability to heal with his hands, drawing people from all over to witness his powers. His incredible journey of faith and self-sacrifice is brought to life in this moving production. Every line delivered was heavy with the weight of their search for a father they never knew. Piniella’s intensity shone especially bright in moments of vulnerability, capturing the character’s internal battle between anger and hope.

A male actor in a white shirt stands in the audience, raising his hand in an engaging moment, surrounded by seated audience members.

John Concado as "Lucie" (aka Lucifer, aka the Devil) brought a much-needed element of trickster energy and comic relief to the story. His portrayal was full of sly humor and wit, providing levity amid the play’s heavier moments. As the devilish character who manipulates and misguides, Concado’s playful banter and mischievous antics balanced the emotional intensity, giving the audience moments to breathe. His chemistry with the rest of the cast added a dynamic layer to the unfolding drama.

Son of an Unknown Father asks its audience to confront the enduring questions of identity and legacy. The play artfully weaves together personal and historical narratives, using minimalist staging to enhance the raw emotions at the heart of the story. Stripped of elaborate set pieces, the reading allowed the actors' performances and the weight of the characters' struggles to take center stage. The result was an intimate, deeply human exploration of the ties that define us—both those we're born with and those we seek to create.
