Opera Praktikos - There Will Be Cake!
Opera Praktikos, New York City's pioneering disability-affirmative opera company, recently delighted audiences with their matinee mono-opera concert series, There Will Be Cake!, held from December 12 to 14, 2024, at Asylum NYC.
This innovative production paired two dessert-inspired mono-operas, each exploring themes of memory, food, and the human experience.
The first piece, Bon Appétit!, composed by Lee Hoiby with text adapted by Mark Shulgasser, is a charming operatic take on Julia Child's classic cooking show, The French Chef. Mezzo-soprano Hailey McAvoy embodied the role of Julia Child, guiding the audience through the whimsical process of baking a French chocolate cake.
The second offering was the world premiere of Fluffernutter, a contemporary mono-opera inspired by the nostalgic New England peanut butter and marshmallow crème sandwich. Composed by Spicer Carr, a queer, autistic writer, with a libretto by Opera Praktikos co-founder Marianna Mott Newirth, Fluffernutter delves into the trials of adulthood and the comforting power of nostalgia. Zwischenfach Shanley Horvitz portrayed Sarah Karmichael, bringing depth and relatability to the character's journey.
Under the stage direction of Gwynn MacDonald and musical direction of pianist Calvin Hitchcock, the performances seamlessly blended humor and introspection, creating an intimate atmosphere that resonated with audiences. The minimalist staging allowed the performers' talents and the evocative storytelling to shine, making the experience both accessible and engaging.
Opera Praktikos, established in 2021 by co-founders Greg Moomjy and Marianna Mott Newirth, is dedicated to making opera an inclusive and accessible art form for all. Their mission is to craft exceptional productions that transcend conventional barriers related to class, economic status, and physical challenges, ensuring that everyone can see themselves in the operas they produce.
Photographing There Will Be Cake! was a delightful experience, capturing the performers' dynamic energy and the audience's engagement. The production's emphasis on inclusivity and its innovative approach to opera were evident in every moment, making it a truly memorable event.
