Lucidity, a new opera, at Abrons Arts Center

The world premiere of Lucidity, a poignant new opera by Laura Kaminsky and David Cote, was brought to life by On Site Opera in collaboration with co-production partner Seattle Opera. This remarkable performance took place at the Abrons Arts Center in New York City, immersing audiences in a deeply moving exploration of memory, music, and the enduring bonds of family. The opera was co-commissioned by Opera in the Heights, Opera Ithaca, and Tri-Cities Opera, reflecting a shared commitment to presenting innovative, emotionally resonant works that tackle universal themes.

Lucidity tells the story of Lili, a singer and composer confronting the challenges of early dementia, and her son Dante, who sets aside his own dreams to care for her. As Lili’s memories begin to fragment, music becomes both an anchor and a pathway for connection, aided by the compassionate efforts of Dr. Klugman and the youthful energy of clarinetist Sunny. Together, they embark on a journey that explores the profound links between memory and music, highlighting the human capacity for resilience and love in the face of loss.

On Site Opera’s production brought Kaminsky’s evocative score and Cote’s poignant libretto to life, with each performance deeply rooted in authenticity and emotional depth. The cast captured the audience with their nuanced portrayals, illuminating the struggles and triumphs of caregiving, memory, and identity. The opera’s minimalist staging and intimate lighting design drew the audience closer to the characters’ experiences, creating a space where music and storytelling merged seamlessly.

Seattle Opera’s co-production involvement and the support of co-commission partners Opera in the Heights, Ithaca Opera, and Tri-Cities Opera underscore the opera’s broad artistic reach and its relevance to communities nationwide. Lucidity is a testament to the collaborative power of the opera world and its ability to address pressing, universal themes with compassion and artistry.
