Unconventional Wisdom Echoes Through St. Paul's in TENET's Concert

As a photographer, it's not just the images I capture but the stories they tell that makes my work so fulfilling. One such story unfolded on the evening of December 7, 2023, at St. Paul’s Chapel in New York City. This was where TENET Vocal Artists presented their concert "Unconventional Wisdom", a celebration of music from 17th-century Italian nuns, an event that proved to be a convergence of history, music, and art.

The Setting: St. Paul's Chapel

This was my first visit to St. Paul's Chapel, a venue resonating with history and character. Nestled at 209 Broadway in the bustling heart of New York, the chapel stood as a testament to architectural beauty and serene spirituality amidst the city's ceaseless energy. Walking into the chapel, I was immediately struck by its solemn elegance, a perfect backdrop for the evening's performance.

Unconventional Wisdom: A Tribute to Italian Nuns

The program for the evening was a rich tapestry of works by composers such as Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, Sulpitia Cesis, Vittoria Aleotti, Isabella Leonarda, and Caterina Assandra. These composers, originating from Italian convents in the 17th century, produced music that was both spiritually uplifting and artistically groundbreaking.

The Performance: A Fusion of Voices and Instruments

The performance featured a remarkable ensemble of artists. Sopranos Jolle Greenleaf, Margaret Carpenter Haigh, and Elena Williamson as well as mezzo-sopranos Kate Maroney and Elisa Sutherland. The instrumentalists included Maria Cleary on the harp, Kathryn Cok on keyboards, and Lisa Terry on the viola da gamba. Each artist brought their unique interpretation to the music, creating a harmonious blend that filled the chapel with a transcendent aura. They were also joined by the treble vocalists of Downtown Voices.

Capturing the Moments

As a photographer, my challenge was to capture the essence of this extraordinary event. The lighting in the chapel provided a soft, warm ambiance that accentuated the performers' expressions. I focused on the interactions between the artists, the movements of the conductor, and the instrumentalists’ focus, all elements that brought the story of the evening to life.

A Photographer's Reflection

Reflecting on the evening, it wasn't just the music or the setting that made "Unconventional Wisdom" special; it was the coming together of history, talent, and passion. As a photographer, I strive to not just capture moments but to tell their stories. This event was a reminder of the power of music to transport us through time and the joy of preserving these moments through the lens.
