We love engagement sessions. It is a completely stress-free time for us to get to know each other and not worry about anything beyond making amazing images. We will spend about an hour together showing off just how in love the two of you are while creating completely natural images (no “say cheese!” from us) and fun.
Above all, don’t stress. At the end of the day, your clothes and location don’t really matter. Just come hang out with us for an hour, laugh a lot, and be yourselves. We’re going to help make sure you feel comfortable, and before you say “I’m awkward in front of the camera,” take a look at our portfolio. None of the people in there are paid models, they’re all real people just like you, many of which told me they were going to be awkward before the shoot.
The date is entirely up to you! Let us know when you’re free, and we will try to make that work. Dates are given to the first couple to return a signed contract and deposit to us, so if you have a specific date that matters to you, we’ll have to move quickly.
The time is usually about an hour before sunset because that is when the most beautiful light is available, but that is not set in stone. If you would prefer a particular time of day that works better for your schedule just tell us, and we’ll make it happen.
As a heads up, weekends book up far in advance because that is usually the easiest time for everybody involved, so if you want to do this sooner rather than later take a look at weekdays.
We want your location to be unique to you. Think about things or places that you love and use that to choose the best location. Do you have a favorite place to go on dates? Maybe a favorite spot for walks? Please tell us all of your thoughts, nothing is off limits. If it’s a business (perhaps your favorite coffee shop?) we can ask for permission to shoot inside. We’ve found that the more personal the location, the better the photos turn out.
If you can’t decide, that’s alright, we have a bunch of amazing spots to choose from, and we’re always happy to recommend one.
These tips are for everybody, regardless of gender! We can all take steps to look amazing.
We suggest dressing up, there is no such thing as too fancy for a photoshoot. It’s not every day that you get professional photos taken, so go all out! Get a manicure (yes, guys can get manicures too, although you don’t have to), get a haircut (about a week before the shoot is best).
Bring two outfits! Many people like to bring a semi-casual outfit (something you might wear on a date to a nice restaurant) and a fancier outfit to create some variety. If you would prefer not to bring a second outfit that’s alright too, sometimes it can be stressful to figure that out, or our couples have a favorite outfit that they want photos of and don’t want to do any changes.
Tip: Try to avoid strapless or skinny straps on dresses because they don’t always look great in photos and limit the amount of variety we can get. Also, try to avoid bright colors. Lighter tones and muted shades work best.
Layers are always great, and feel free to accessorize with a watch, jewelry, or even a flower crown, go wild! If you have a ring already, please make sure it’s clean before the shoot.
If you want to wear heels, perfect! Also, make sure you bring a pair of flats for when we’re walking around. Men should probably stick to clothes toed shoes.
A few don’ts:
Avoid clothes that show bra straps or tags
Avoid anything with logos/branding
Coordinate, but don’t wear matching outfits.
Avoid tennis shoes/sneakers
Avoid polos or anything that doesn’t fit well (a lot of guys tend to have baggy clothes, especially suits that are not tailored)
Hats usually aren’t a great idea, but there are exceptions. If you feel strongly about wearing a hat, please bring it, and we can utilize near the end of our session so as not to mess up your hair.
There’s a good chance that your partner may not be bought into the idea of spending about an hour of their hard earned free time taking pictures. If both of you are already excited, great, but if not, please take a second to educate your partner about why this is such an amazing idea.
Some tips on how to do that:
Tell your partner why you chose us
Show them your favorite sessions of ours
Tell them you like our style
Above all, tell them how important this is to you. Even if they’re not bought in, if you communicate how much this means to you, they will want to do it just to make you happy.
This will be so relaxed, you’ll barely know you’re doing a photoshoot. We do some very light posing and direction, but you should feel free to be yourselves. We will do our best to make sure you’re as comfortable in front of the camera as a professional model. We’ll move around a bit, so please let us know in advance if you have any knee, back, or other physical problems, or if there is anything we should know about that might limit how we can position the two of you. Beyond that, we’ll keep it flowing, and it’ll feel like you’re out for a day with friends who happen to have a camera with them.
The first thing you’ll want to do after your session is to go out on a date, after all, you’re already dressed up! It’ll take us about 3-4 weeks to edit the photos and get them back to you (that’s a high estimate, we aim for faster processing time, but sometimes things come up, so we like to leave a little wiggle room).
Tip: If you’re planning on using these images for any sort of stationary (save the dates, invitations, guest books, etc.) please leave enough time to make sure that can happen. You’ll want to schedule your session about 2 months or so in advance of when you want the stationary ready.
Set a date, time, and location
Return the contract and the deposit so that we can hold the date
Schedule any hair, makeup, or nail appointments
Choose your outfits
Clean your ring
Pick a date spot for after the shoot!
Pack a bag with:
Flats/flip-flops if you plan on wearing heels
Water bottle (if it’s hot out) or coat (if it’s colder)
(Optional) A second outfit (including shoes and accessories)
We’ll probably get along just fine, we’re awkward in front of the camera also! The good part is that an excellent photographer (like us!) knows how to keep it relaxed and low-stress, so you’ll barely feel like you’re in front of the camera at all.
I’m not going to do anything crazy like alter your size or shape or change the color of your shirt. All photos receive basic edits like cropping or adjusting exposure (brightness), as well as stylistic edits that make our photos look like our photos. If there is something specific you would like edited, please reach out so that we can discuss it.
No, I do not give those out. After your session, I spend a lot of time carefully going through the images and deleting the images that are not good (maybe you’re sneezing, or somebody walked in front of the camera). After that, I process all of the images so that they are styled like the rest of my portfolio, which theoretically is the reason you hired me. The unedited photos are always very flat, and they aren’t in a file format that can be uploaded to social media or printed anyway. I promise you I will not hold back any good photos, you will get every photo that shows both you and myself in the best light.
All images will be uploaded to an online gallery which can then be emailed to you instantly. You can then download them and put them on a USB, CD, or just save them on your computer. If you want your images on a branded USB that can be purchased a la carte.
We give an estimate of 3-4 weeks for delivery, but always try to make it faster. We prefer to underpromise and overdeliver rather than saying we’ll get it done in a week and asking for more time because something came up.
Yes! You will have all of the high-resolution images with full printing rights. If you are looking for high-quality artwork that you can display in your home and will last forever, you’ll want to order that a la carte through us. However, if you just want a few wallet prints or something to give to the parents, of course, we can still give you fantastic quality prints, but you also have the option of going anywhere else.
Thank you for asking! Please fill out this contact form or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can begin planning the perfect session. Remember that dates are not reserved until you have given us a signed contract and deposit.
